This Friday night’s special market symbolises the end of our summer season (don’t worry, we’ll be here every Saturday until Christmas still, just less…summery!) and the end of this year’s collaboration with Oxjam Manchester, who have provided us with so much excellent entertainment this summer. That to us means one thing: a blooming good excuse for a party!
Thankfully, Oxjam are keen as mustard to go out with a bang for their final appearance with us AND we’ve hooked them up with the absolutely awesome PoWWow Pedal Power sound system to make sure your Friday night has some serious sound accompaniment! We will release the full line up of acts for the evening – plus information about some free fun stuff for kids happening from 4.00pm – later today on our Facebook and Twitter pages, but in the mean time we thought you might want to know a bit more about our awesome collaborators:
PoWWow Pedal Power’s 200W sound system is powered by a three-bicycle rig (and – crucially – their riders!). Visitors to the market of all ages will be able to get on the bikes to create 100% green energy to power the music, make new friends in pedal powered parallels, get fit and of course have loads of fun!
The PoWWow team are based in Levenshulme and have been lending their energies to projects in Manchester for many years – most recently the not-for-profit Platt Fields Bike Hub – a space designed to host various community focussed bicycle projects. The project is based in the old Boathouse by the lake in Platt Fields where they aim to host a plethora of interesting and unusual bicycle related courses and activities that warmly welcome inclusion from people across the city.
The Hub is still very much in the early stages of development and is still evolving but the team welcome new ideas and groups – get in touch with them for more info.
Oxjam is a music festival made up of hundreds of events around the UK all raising money for Oxfam.
In 2013 the Manchester team broke all records in the North West and raised over £7,000! The national target for Oxjam Takeovers in 2014 is £270,000 – and the Manchester team are aiming to smash their previous record this year with a multi-venue music festival which will take place on 4th and 5th October – early bird tickets are only £10 – get yours now!
They’ve been with us all this summer raising awareness and funds for Oxfam while getting to know some of the great artists they will be showing at the festival. This is their final market with us this year, as they refocus their energies on the main festival but they will be going out in style. We have had an absolutely wonderful time working with them and we couldn’t be more grateful for the energy and enthusiasm they have shown – even on the most “British” of summer days! So that’s the back story – we do love a good collaboration – now come see the reality! The market on Friday will run 4.00pm – 9.00pm with entertainment throughout and a full bar, loads of food and some seriously awesome traders.
